 |
After earning the title of the largest Airport in the North/Northeast with the amplification of the runway used for take offs and landings concluded in January of 2000, the Guararapes/Gilberto Freyre International Airport, since July of last year, counts on one of the most modern airport terminals in the country. There are two new waiting areas for departures, seven concourses, new check in terminals, and an area for relaxation and services.
The new parking building is operating, with an enlarged area of 420 thousand square feet. 26 airplanes can now dock simultaneously at the terminal. Previously, the capacity was for only 14. On some occasions, it was necessary for the planes to fly over the city until there was an opening on the tarmac, according to Fernando Dueire, the Secretary of Infra-Structure.
The passenger terminal increased the reception capacity of 1.5 million travelers a year to a total of 5 million. Great changes can be observed inside of the airport. There are eleven elevators available, with nine escalators, 52 plasma panel screens for better communication with the passengers, and a modern parking garage with capacity for more than two thousand vehicles.
The Pernambucan economy was the most benefited by the work. Tourism will be stimulated, air cargo was given incentive and freight costs were reduced, along a combination of benefits stimulating increased earnings for the State.
