THURSDAY
2:30 PM - Depart from the Hotel in the direction of the Francisco Brennand Ceramics Workshop. It is both a workshop and museum among temples and gardens. The artist models in clay symbols and allegories, displayed as panels on the walls, or as images in niches and crannies. This is the workshop, which guards the artist's pieces. After visiting the Brennand Workshop, it is the PANORAMIC APIPUCOS TOUR, POÇO DA PANELA, MONTEIRO and CASA FORTE, known as the "Bairros Verdes (Green neighborhoods)" of Recife. Casa Forte was founded on the lands of the old Casa Forte Mill in 1934, the town square is the first public garden conceived by painter Roberto Burle Marx, in Recife. On the same lands was formed Poço da Panela, next to the Capibaribe River, with mansions from the 19th Century.
6 pm - Enjoy a tasting session when you visit the Carvalheira Cachaça Distillery, where you can observe the fabrication and bottling of cachaça. There is also a discussion session covering the history of Carvalheira Cachaça. At the end of the meeting, a musical trio playing Forro- Pe de Serra will perform at the location.

Oriented towards the sea, less than 20 miles from Recife, Igarassu harbors a religious history: the Church of Santos Cosme e Damião, built in 1535 (the oldest in Brazil). The baroque architecture of the city is one of the most representative of the Northeast. It was the Marcos Ranch (Marcos of Stone) that marked the historic boundaries of Pernambuco and Itamaracá, where in 1516, Cristóvão Jacques harbored the first commercial community in Pernambuco. At this site, on March 9, 1535, Duarte Coelho landed to take possession of his district, starting the Portuguese colonization process in Brazil.
After Igarassu, the destination is the island of Itamaracá, one of the great tourist treasures in Pernambuco, thanks to its historic value and many options for relaxation. The island was the first maritime port where battles were fought in the 17th Century between the Dutch and Portuguese. There are 10 miles of warm water beaches to be found here. On the beach at Fortinho is a large area of tidelands. Fort Orange, situated on the island, is one of the largest fortresses in the Northeast, built in 1631 by the Dutch, made out of hardened, dried earth; it was reconstructed in 1654 by the Portuguese, while still preserving the original architecture. Also in Itamaracá, the tourist can get to know Vila Velha, which conserves the original colonial mansion style, and the seat for the Our Lady of Conception Church (Nossa Senhora da Conceição), from the 17th Century. You also have a privileged view of the Santa Cruz Canal, Coroa do Avião, and the city of Igarassu.

8 am -Departing the Hotel, your destination is Bezerros. Located in the Pernambucan foothills, 65 miles from the Capital. Bezerros is known as the "Terra dos Papangus (Land of the Papangus)"; owing to its famous masquerade Carnaval. The old mansion, the Serra Negra Ecological Park, and the cuisine in the areas around the town of Encruzilhada de São João are other attractions found in the region. The fabrication of cakes, sweets, and cookies is something else the city has to offer. The main feature however, is the broad and rich selection of art and craftwork: woodcuts, Carnaval masks, literature of the songs and poetry, along with objects in wood, ceramic, and wax. It is in Bezerros that you will find the Pernambuco Craft Center, truly an artistic complex holding permanent exhibits of artists from our area, in addition to possessing a valuable collection of work from various artists and artisans located in diverse regions of the country...
Leaving Bezerros, we head towards Caruaru, the Capital of Forró. During the month of June, the city is transformed for the Festival of São João, with a whole lot of forró, typical foods, dance block competition, and fireworks. Alto do Moura is found within this city, considered by UNESCO as the greatest Center for Figurative Art in the Americas. It is the same small village that 487 artisans live, students of Master Vitalino, specialized in manipulation of clay and ceramics. Another great attraction is the Caruaru Fair, where the fruits and different flavors of their crafts are commercialized.
A few miles from Caruaru is Nova Jerusalem, the largest open-air theater in the world. Nova Jerusalem is formed in an area of 750,000 sq. Ft., surrounded by over 2 miles of rock walls, 7 doors, and 70 towers 22 feet high. During Easter Week, the spectacle known as the Paixão de Cristo is performed, attracting 60 thousand people to this part of Pernambuco from other states and overseas. 500 actors are divided into 12 open-air stages. The presentations last, on an average, about two hours. Thousands of people have seen the presentations in 35 years of uninterrupted seasons. A Thematic Fair also occurs alongside the show, with huts decorated in Arab motifs, and vendors clothed in the Arabic style typical of the epoch of Christ.

MONDAY

During the route, the tourist passes the Santa Tereza Convent, the Varadoura Market, Jacaré Park, São Bento School, and the Praça do Carmo.
Stopping at Sítio de Seu Reis, there is a short walk to the Praça da Preguiça and São Pedro, where you will become familiar with the various gastronomical options of the city. Soon after, you will visit the studio of sculptor Paulo Costa and the Posada dos Quatro Cantos, where visitors can participate in the workshops for frevo, coco and ciranda, with recorded music. In the Carnaval workshops, you will also see exhibits of dolls, can use costumes to take photos, and find regional music for sale.
Another good option is the Mourisco mansion, built in the 17th Century, which houses the Mourisco Restaurant and local crafts store. The traditional mansions of Olinda, part of the Historic Patrimony of Humanity, can be studied by strolling on Bernardo Vieira de Melo street, where you will also find the Mercado da Ribeira, Santeiro Elias, Marco do 1º Grito de República, the Marisa Lacerda Studio, the house of Alceu Valença and the Governor's Palace, headquarters of the municipal government. At the end of the street is the São Bento Monastery, housing a beautiful and rich altar, constructed in gold, shown during 2002 in New York at the Guggenheim Museum. During visits to the monastery, tourists can hear the Gregorian chanting of the monks, beginning at 5:40. After the monastery, visits are made to the Eufrásio Barbosa Market, where there is a presentation of "Projeto Sementes da Nação", a cultural revitalization work for maracatu and other rhythms, seeking to rescue Afro-Brazilian manifestations. This project assisted in the artistic and cultural formation of many youths and children, originating the Maracatu Mirim and the Batucada Jovem Groups, making up part of the Maracatu Nação Pernambuco Community.

Located in the municipality of Ipojuca, Porto de Galinhas, 36 miles South of Recife, is the most popular seaside hot spot in Pernambuco. It joins together natural beauties along 4 miles of beaches containing white sand and warm water. An old port famous for receiving slaves, nowadays it has a modern infrastructure for tourism, entertainment, and relaxation, with its restaurants, bars, art fairs and clubs, in addition to hotels and Posadas. For white sands, you can seek out Muro Alto, named for a wall of corals surrounding natural pools. Other close by beaches included Maracaípe, with open sea and strong waves drawing international surfing championships, and Serrambi, known for calm blue water and the sophistication of its condominiums.

Every Sunday, a great fair, called Domingo na Rua (Street Sunday) occurs. There are over 120 stands exhibiting products of various price ranges. Visitors will find crafts and art including paintings, decorative objects, jewelry, antiques, clothing, plants, and a lot else. Domingo na Rua also appears all throughout the neighborhood, disseminating local culture through presentations of music and folkloric dancing. |
