During Holy Week, Pernambuco is the stage for one of the greatest demonstrations of Faith in the world: the re-enactment of the Paixão de Cristo (Passion of Christ), in the city of Brejo da Madre de Deus. The show takes place in Nova Jerusalém (New Jerusalem), in the district of Fazenda Nova, 110 miles from Recife, with an area of 83 thousand sq. yards, surrounded by walls of rocks, with 7 doors, and 70 towers that are each 23 feet high.
During 35 years of interrupted seasons of shows, thousands of people from Brazil, and all over the world, have already been to Nova Jerusalém to accompany the greatest open-air show on kthe planet, uniting around 500 actors divided into 12 stages. During recent years, the alternative Thematic Fair has been presented alongside the show, with Arab style huts, and sellers wearing clothes typical of the epoch of Jesus Christ.
The Paixão de Cristo relies on experienced actors. Participation of the talent from major television stations and theater plays carry the public to heightened levels of emotion, especially during the crucifixion.
In all, the Paixão de Cristo is unique, a presentation you simply cannot miss.
