| Paço da Alfândega (Customs Palace) |
information |
| During the Dutch occupation, the extreme south of Recife became consolidated as a commercial hub, thanks to the first port of the city, which was constructed there. In 1732 the old Customs Building was built, which also was a convent, a sugar warehouse, and now hosts the newest shopping area of the region, the Paço Alfândega. Uniting the sophistication of the of the fashion designer label stores with the beauty of the historic building, the new center for shopping is divided into four levels: services, fashion, dining, and panoramic restaurants. Outside the building is the Cultural Bookstore, the largest in Brazil, with 26 thousand square feet. It also features the Convention and Business Center for the Recife wharf area with two parking areas (800 spaces), a garden, observatory, open air exhibit space, an area for fashion shows, a mini-convention center, bookstore, auditorium (300 seats), and 4 meeting rooms. Rather unique, the business hours are from midday until midnight.
